Only If In A Dream

Event: Only If In A Dream

With strange changes to the time of sunrise and set come strange changes to the City itself. It’s only natural for this sort of bizarre behaviour to foretell something a little ominously, after all; the City has never been one to spring changes upon its citizens.

Around 3 PM on May 1, the sun will begin to set. Too early, yet again, but with another little change: instead of being a beautiful sight of pinks and yellows streaking across a blue sky, it will appear almost as though a thunderstorm is coming up on the horizon, rolling in at precisely the same time. The sky will, for half an hour, be the dark, angry blue-purple of a bruise, with orange trying to peek through in places until dark finally falls. Shortly thereafter, the rain that looked like it was coming in will fall in a booming thunderstorm until the evening.

The next day, the citizens of the City of Sin get to find out precisely what that odd sunset and accompanying rainstorm foretold: at random intervals, people begin to fall asleep wherever they are. It doesn’t last for too long - five minutes in most cases, though some people can experience naps up to half an hour - but it’s definitely inconvenient. It doesn’t matter where you are or what you were doing, if the urge comes upon you to sleep, then sleep you will. There’s no fighting the drooping of eyelids this time.

Of course, what’s even more inconvenient is the fact that these brief naps appear to trigger something in the network devices that displays whatever characters happen to be dreaming about at the time. Hopefully it’s nothing incriminating.

Fortunately, everything in the City must come to an end, and late on May 6, another thunderstorm will roll in, lasting the entire night. When everyone wakes up the next morning, the strange City-wide narcolepsy won’t be a problem any more, but the results of it will remain.

What no one knows - not even the Magistrates, or so they claim - is that this is a very direct response to some of the political goings-on of late. Someone isn’t happy.

This is a mod-run plot, taking place from May 1 to May 6 in game, and February 14 to March 3 OOCly. There will be an announcement in the State of the City to remind players, and a short mod notice to declare the event officially open on the day of.

FAQ
    - I’m not into this. Is this plot optional?
Absolutely! In no way is this mandatory. Characters do not necessarily have to succumb to the bouts of narcolepsy, nor do they have to reply to anyone else’s dreams. However, if you want to have a dream posted, your character does have to fall asleep for that to occur. Not just the regular kind they do at night, either.

    - Is there any way I can say my character is immune to the narcolepsy?
No. If you don’t want your character to succumb to it, it will be due to sheer luck on their part, rather than physiology or skill.

    - Does my character have to dream about anything in particular?
Not at all, though we do ask that the dreams become nightmares at some point throughout. Otherwise, characters can dream about whatever they like. They could have a dream about frolicking through fields with ponies and unicorns, just as long as those ponies and unicorns eventually turn on them, or they could have a nightmare about falling into a river. They could even have dreams about memories, if you see fit, and the memories will not need to be entirely accurate. Long story short: it is entirely up to you what you would like to have them dream, as long as it’s some form of nightmare.

    - How many dreams can I post for my character?
Because this will span roughly the entire in-game week, we will allow up to three nightmares to be shared via the network. That said, we do suggest, if you choose to post more than one, that you make the most of the extended timeline and not post all at once. There’s no reason a character can’t share one the very first day, and then have another on the very last day. Additionally, it is by no means mandatory to have a dream on day one.

    - Is there any specific format for writing my character’s nightmare?
No, there is not! Players can write them however they choose, whether it’s from the first person perspective or the third or even the second! The nightmares can be as detailed or vague as you like.

    - Is it possible for my character to lock the broadcast of their dream?
Strangely enough, no. There seems to be something going on with the network devices that makes it impossible to lock the dreams themselves, though all conversations after the fact can be. The dreams themselves will remain open for everyone to see.

    - Is there anything about this my character can notice?
On the outside, it appears to have affected the entire City. That is to say, it’s not just PCs who are affected. It will be fairly obvious within the first day or two that even the NPCs - human and demon alike - all around the City are falling asleep. No one knows about the state of the Magistrates, though, as they haven’t been seen. All appointments, business and personal, have been postponed until further notice.

Characters who have the ability to sense magic may be able to feel the slightest pull, indicating that the City itself may be behind it. However, there doesn’t seem to be anything else out of the norm. Just a regular day in the City. Except for the spontaneous siestas, that is.

    - Can my character figure out what’s going on from what they’ve noticed?
They’re welcome to speculate, but as for what’s really going on? No. It’s a very curious phenomenon that’s happening here, and thoroughly inexplicable.

    - Is this metaplot related?
That’s for the moderators to know, and you to eventually find out!

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask below. Plotting here is optional but not necessary, as a little bit of surprise might be fun!

Would someone watching the broadcast be able to tell intuitively (as you can in dreams) the relationship of the people in the dream to the dreamer? Or would they just see their physical appearance?

Example: say someone's father appears in a video broadcast of a dream, would a person watching the video identify that as dreamer's father, or just see an older man they don't recognize?
