"I thought I came here on my own," Elizabeth mused. She frowned deeply and sighed. "Have people tried to leave?" Surely the Lutece device had been patented, so the plans for making it would be on record. It seemed unlikely that such a marvelous discovery as a window between other worlds would go unnoticed by the scientific community.

Unless none of that was true, or she was in a universe where the Luteces hadn't made their great discovery. Her head swam a little, reminding her not to think about what the Elizabeth native to this universe, if there was one, was doing.
