Neal waved a hand begging the bartender for two beers. He pointed to one of the tap beers hoping that it was acceptable because he needed something. Maybe he needed the alcohol, maybe something to wrap his hands around or many just another excuse.
He exhaled a slow breath, his gaze returning to Emma only to look away again. He can tell that she's trying but he wasn't an ass enough to point it out.
"The kind that wants to protect their son..." His voice trailed off. "I wouldn't have told him about me either." He can't even be mad at her, he had no right to and yet his anger boiled, thrived and pulsed beneath his skin. He failed his son but at the end of the day he's only angry at himself. "I can bet you're a wonderful mother." Neal looked up at her. "because you love him."
He exhaled a slow breath. "I notice you still have it." He pointed to the necklace grabbing at the beer as the bartender placed it in front of each of them. He didn't take a sip but wrapped his fingers around the cool glass as if that alone might ground him into place.
