Not to mention that he's not from the right century to recognize, well, much of anything he's seeing at the moment. So it's really only natural that his immediate reaction is to pull out an antique-looking revolver and start demanding answers of the first person he sees.
2 Okay, this he disapproves of highly. He's not going to run, however, and since he's never even heard of a phone before that's not an option either. In any case, he's a lonely man. Charming, yes. Friendly, yes. But people around him have a certain tendency to disappear.
So instead of taking the OP's suggestions, he'll go with the stab-everything-in-the-face plan. He's good at that plan, it's his favorite. And his strength is more than human.

He palms his knife as the thugs get closer, and his stomach growls. Any well-meaning soul coming to rescue him will soon have to rescue the thugs instead.
